At the Natural Health Centre we have a Physioworld clinic offering musculo-skeletal physiotherapy for a wide range of injuries.

Recently we have welcomed a top neuro-physiotherapist - Miranda Baretto - who has vast experience and specialist knowledge at treating a wide range of neurological conditions.

In addition, Anna Cawthorne -an experienced physiotherapist specialising in neural manipulation and Visceral (organ) manipulation has joined our centre.

Neural Manipulation (NM)

Our nervous system includes all the nerves of the limbs, trunk and organs, the nerve membranes (dura) and the cranium (skull). NM techniques release the tension in nerves where they may have got compressed or tethered. I’ve also trained in Craniosacral Therapy, another method of addressing problems with the nervous system.

Visceral (organ) Manipulation (VM)

Pioneering French osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral developed Visceral Manipulation (VM) (and NM), a unique specialist bodywork therapy. Visceral Manipulation is used to solve problems throughout the whole body. It is an integrative approach that does not just focus on the bones, muscles and joints but also the internal organs, nerves and blood vessels.

A problem can appear to be from a joint or muscle but sometimes originates from another tissue, such as an organ. Shoulder pain for example could be due to a liver issue or a low back problem caused by digestive or gynaecological problems. A problem in any tissue can also cause a chain of tension and widespread symptoms throughout the body, for example a kidney issue may lead to hip and foot pain due to the nerve and soft tissue connections between these areas.

In VM the practitioner searches for the ‘source’ of the pain and works with the related tissues, this often may be far from where symptoms are felt. As the origin of the problem is released, the symptoms will start to reduce. VM is a gentle and precise hands-on therapy. It may help when other treatment has either not been effective or only given short term relief; this is because VM addresses the cause of the problem, such as an organ and if this has not been addressed symptoms recur.

How can organs cause problems?

Trauma, surgery, illness, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, postural problems, pregnancy, childbirth and emotional tensions can all cause organ problems and can be treated with VM techniques.

Emotions and Health

Our emotions have an impact on how our body functions. Different emotions affect different organs. Emotional reactions can cause heartburn, nausea, faintness, ulcers and more significant illness. VM techniques can enhance the health of an organ and restore physical and emotional balance.

Energy field healing is also a powerful therapy, it works with the body’s energy system, as a way to get to the core origin of issues and address physical and emotional symptoms, past trauma and mental distress (see leaflet on EFH).

What is a session like?

In an initial assessment, I would use specific physical examination techniques to accurately diagnose the problem and look at the underlying causes. Gentle manual therapy techniques would be used to release the tissue tensions in the body. Although some of the techniques make deep contact with the body it is non-invasive and not painful. During treatment the focus is not just on the current problems but also on preventing future health issues. I can also prescribe individualised exercises to optimise recovery, movement and performance; this is also useful in promoting better health.

Initial sessions can last up to an hour and follow up sessions 45 minutes.

About Anna:

Anna graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 1995 and a Masters in Manipulative therapy in 2002. She has 20 years of clinical experience, specialising in musculoskeletal disorders and working in the NHS, private practice and also overseas. She has also completed advanced training in Women’s Health Physiotherapy (PGCert) for pregnancy/postnatal issues and other women’s health conditions.

Since 2010 Anna has been training in Visceral and Neural Manipulation which she is increasingly using with patients, this has further increased herscope of practice, and she can work with conditions that do not usually resolve with physiotherapy. Visceral and Neural Manipulation fit into a natural, healthcare model. To uncover the root cause of health issues, the focus is on the whole person (physical, emotional and mental balance). Instead of just treating symptoms, Anna believes in striving to find the causes and addressing them. She is passionate about promoting health, the prevention of disease and increasing the sense of power and control over your own health.
