Shiatsu

What is shiatsu?

Originating from Japan, shiatsu is the application of massage techniques to the energy pathways that run through the body. These pathways are known as meridians. The techniques are applied through clothing and whilst the receiver lies on a futon on the floor. Massaging the meridians balances the energy passing through them allowing the body to heal itself.

All things are manifestations of energy. This energy is referred to as “ki” in Japan and is pronounced “key”. Other traditions call this energy “chi” or “prana” and you may be familiar with these terms.

Prior to or during illness, following physical or mental exertion the flow of energy in the meridians may become obstructed. This may cause a deficiency or an excess of energy along the meridians. This is referred to as kyo and jitsu by shiatsu practitioners. These words are similar to the concepts of yin and yang.

By applying pressure, holding and rocking techniques with the thumbs, fingers, knees, elbows or feet to the meridian pathways the energy is balanced and health returns.

Shiatsu is a very safe, relaxing and gentle treatment and can be used to treat all kinds of aliments although it is generally recommended that you should not receive shiatsu if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure.

Shiatsu is beneficial for any stress related conditions including back pain, headaches, whiplash injuries, neck stiffness, joint pain and many sports injuries, depression, digestive disorders and insomnia amongst other ailments.

Shiatsu is as much about returning to health as it is about personal development and it can assist greatly in helping you to overcome any emotional conditions surrounding a physical illness/imbalance.

Diagnosis to decide which meridians need treating is either by using the “Five Element” model, by hara diagnosis, otherwise known as “Zen shiatsu” or a combination of the two. Five Element diagnosis looks more at a person’s traits and therefore relates to long standing conditions or predispositions to illness whereas Zen shiatsu deals very much with how your energy is at the particular time the hara diagnosis is carried out.

It is best to have a course of approximately six sessions on a regular basis initially if you intend to have shiatsu to deal with a certain complaint and thereafter once a month for relaxation.
